Mr. Singer has been a member of the State Bar of Michigan since 1973.  Throughout his legal career, he has conducted a complex commercial litigation practice involving a broad range of business disputes including shareholder and partnership disputes, business torts, health care fraud litigation, and class actions before state and federal trial and appellate courts in numerous jurisdictions as well as arbitration proceedings throughout the United States.

He has represented:

  • a health care consulting company in a case which involved ERISA claims and obtained dismissal of these claims.
  • a health care corporation and its officers and directors, against claims by minority shareholders who alleged numerous allegations of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.
  • a large hospital against claims under the False Claims Act based on violations of Stark and Anti-Kickback statutes in the Eastern District of Michigan, which resulted in a complete dismissal of the claims against the hospital after a month. long trial
  • national stock brokerage firm in state court litigation involving claims for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.
  • n unsecured creditors’ committee in multi-party accountant malpractice litigation in federal court in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
  • a city that was involved in a federal grand jury investigation concerning alleged corruption in its police force.
  • a large hazardous waste disposal firm in state court breach of contract and fiduciary duty litigation brought by an ex-president and minority shareholders. 
  • plaintiffs in a § 1983 action against a large municipality which improperly charged a father for giving his son “Mike’s Hard Lemonade” and then placed the son in foster care at the time of the arrest.
  • a large municipality in a § 1983 action against police officers arising out of a police action to arrest a person charged with violent crimes. 
  • a national publishing company in defense of sex and racial discrimination claims.  
  • a former U.S. Surgeon General as amicus curiae in the United States Supreme Court in a Michigan case concerning the constitutionality of drunk driving check Lanes.
  • the lead defendant in multi-party tax fraud litigation which resulted in a complete acquittal.
  • a receiver in a trial in Wayne County Circuit Court where the receiver in a complex receivership was accused of fraudulent conduct and the Court found that there was no basis for allegations and granted the receiver sanctions against the plaintiff law firm.
  • a city manager in a case brought by owners of an entertainment venue alleging claims under § 1983, among others, which resulted in the dismissal of all claims against this city manager.
  • a large publishing company in a breach of contract case by an author who claimed the company defrauded her of substantial royalties.
 

In addition to his active trial practice, Mr. Singer is involved in numerous alternative dispute resolution proceedings, including acting as a court appointed mediator in a number of large business disputes, as well as to being an arbitrator in cases in Michigan and other jurisdictions. Also, Mr. Singer has been a member of numerous case evaluation panels involving complex civil litigation. Currently, he is a member of the State Bar Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and Chair of its Governmental Affairs Subcommittee.

Mr. Singer has been involved in a variety of civic activities, including serving as a member of the Board of Control of Michigan Technological University; a board member of the Michigan Task Force on International Trade, co-chair of the Merit Selection Panel for U.S. District Judges for the Eastern District of Michigan and as a Judge of the Military Appeals Tribunal for the State of Michigan.

Mr. Singer has also been a presenter at numerous legal seminars including speaking on Damages and Business Tort Cases, The Trial of a RICO Case; and The Fiduciary Obligations of Directors and Officers of Closely Held Corporations.

Mr. Singer is a past chairman of the Litigation Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He has been heavily involved in many other state bar committee activities in the past, including serving on the Michigan Supreme Court Rules of Evidence Committee which promulgated the Michigan Rules of Evidence. Mr. Singer has also authored the Evidence Survey for the Wayne Law School Law Review.

Mr. Singer has also consistently been involved in significant pro bono work, including the representation of former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop as amicus curiae in the United States Supreme Court concerning constitutionality of drunk driving check lanes, representation of numerous elderly advocacy groups in a federal lawsuit against the State of Michigan to maintain a waiver of the Medicare law that allowed elderly clients to remain in their homes with home health care services as opposed to being put in nursing homes, and a class action on behalf of all hearing impaired state prisoners denied appropriate assistance and equipment as required by federal law.

Mr. Singer is AV Peer Review Rated by LexisNexis/Martindale-Hubbell. He has been consistently named as a Michigan Super Lawyer and continues to be recognized by Best Lawyers in America as a “Best Lawyer” in commercial litigation. Mr. Singer is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, where he was an editor of the Journal of Law Reform.
